Mike Dertien has been building kites since the 1990s and has competed in kite making competitions at the AKA as a master kite maker since 2014. Living in Grandville, Michigan he flys kites at the Lake Michigan shore line which is only 25 miles from home. The place for smooth steady winds. He's also AKA regional director for region 5. 

Mike has traveled coast to coast in the USA attending AKA conventions to compete in kite making, teach techniques, and have fun flying with friends from around the country. He attended the Festival in Dieppe, France in 2018 and is making plans to return in 2024. While there he took inspiration from many world wide kite makers. 

His approach to kite making is to keep it simple and enjoyable.
